Complexity versus cybersecurity in the data center: which wins?

In November 1999, cyber pioneer Bruce Schneier published the seminal essay, A plea for simplicity: you can’t secure what you don’t understand. He closed the first paragraph by stating: “The worst enemy of security is complexity. This has been true since the beginning of computers, and it’s likely to be true for the foreseeable future.”

So far that prediction has proved correct. Data center operators still struggle when trying to protect their systems from vulnerabilities introduced by new services and technologies. However, over the past two decades, good practices have emerged on how to handle the tension between complexity and security.
